Dan Haren contract reaction overwhelmingly positive

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Folks seem to like the relative low risk of Dan Haren's reported one-year, $10 million contract with the Dodgers.

The reaction to the Dodgers' acquisition has been overwhelmingly positive, tied mostly to the short-term nature of the contract. Here is a sampling of opinions on the one-year, $10 million deal:

  • "The worst thing that can happen — besides an injury, of course — is that Haren repeats his recent cycle of struggles, failing to live up to his peripheral numbers yet again. Some pitchers just consistently manage to underperform on a regular basis, and maybe Haren is now one of those pitchers," wrote Jason Collette at FanGraphs. "But we certainly don’t know he is yet, and if he’s not, the Dodgers are potentially getting a two year steal in a way not too dissimilar from how the Pirates landed Francisco Liriano last year."
  • "The market keeps trending upwards in terms of both years and dollars. Jason Vargas, who is mediocre to the point of tears, just got four guaranteed years from Kansas City," wrote Mike Petriello at Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness, one of many reasons he liked the deal. "We keep hearing that Ervin Santana & Ricky Nolasco want all the years for all the dollars. Hell, Tim Lincecum got twice the guaranteed years and nearly four times the money."
  • Paul Sporer at Paint the Black liked the deal, though also noted Haren's health will play a huge role.
  • Tony Jackson at Dodger Scribe likes the contract.
  • Chad Moriyama sees signs of worry, but still likes the deal.
  • Mark Saxon at ESPN LA called the Haren signing "a sensible move."
