2013 Dodgers review: Shawn Tolleson

Rob Tringali

A look back at the all-too-brief 2013 campaign for new Ranger Shawn Tolleson.

Of all the 49 players who played in a game for the 2013 Dodgers, Shawn Tolleson played the least, with only two batters faced in an injury-plagued season.

What went right

Tolleson on April 12 threw two strikes to Paul Goldschmidt, which qualifies as one of the most successful matchups against the National League MVP runner-up in 2013.

What went wrong

Just about everything else, unfortunately for Tolleson and the Dodgers. Tolleson was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on April 12 and pitched in one game for the Dodgers. He relieved Clayton Kershaw in the eighth inning with the bases loaded, down 1-0. Tolleson threw 11 pitches but just three for strikes, walking in two inherited runners.

Tolleson that morning had trouble sleeping because of his back, and it ended up wiping out his season. He had surgery to repair a herniated disc in April, and his attempted comeback was sidelined by a hip injury in August.

Those two batters in April were the only ones faced by Tolleson all year, and he became just the fourth Dodgers pitcher ever to face at least two batters and not record an out in one season. The last was Cal McLish in 1946.

2014 status

Tolleson slipped behind Chris Withrow and Jose Dominguez on the reliever depth chart, and the Dodgers tried to outright Tolleson to the minors, but the Rangers claimed the right-hander off waivers on Nov. 19. For Tolleson, add another to the "what went right" category, as he gets to pitch for his hometown team.
