2013 Dodgers review: Alex Castellanos

Rob Tringali

In a season that saw the Dodgers seemingly have too many outfielders, Alex Castellanos found himself the odd man out all season as he saw very limited action in Los Angeles. He will look for another chance with the Boston Red Sox in 2014.

Alex Castellanos came into 2013 Spring Training looking for a chance to make the team as a reserve. However as the season progressed, he was passed by both his Isotope teammate Scott Van Slyke and 2013 NL Jackie Robinson Award finalist Yaseil Puig and Castellanos spent most of the year in AAA.

What went right

Castellanos had few chances in LA in 2013 and his one home run came in one of poor games the Dodgers played in the second half of the season, a 19-3 loss to the Giants at Dodger Stadium on September 14th.

What went wrong

Noting in particular went wrong for the Castellanos in his brief time with the Dodgers in 2013, in Albuquerque, he didn't have as good a season as he did in 2012, hitting .257/.347/.468 with 19 home runs in 105 games with the Isotopes. He did spend all of 2013 playing either the outfield and a few games at DH.

2014 status

The Dodgers acquired Jeremy Hazelbaker from Red Sox for Castellanos on October 23. Castellanos had been designated for assignment on October 17th in order to have a roster spot open for Mike Baxter. Castellanos will have one more option available to use in the coming seasons.
