Dodgers spring training 2013: Clayton Kershaw to start opener Feb. 23 vs. White Sox

Rick Scuteri-US PRESSWIRE

Kershaw will start Feb. 23 against the White Sox, while newcomers Zack Greinke and Hyun-jin Ryu will each pitch one day later.

In 2012 Clayton Kershaw went through an entire spring training without pitching in a Cactus League game at his home park of Camelback Ranch. In 2013, that will be rectified in the first game, as Kershaw will start the Dodgers' spring opener on Saturday, Feb. 23 against the White Sox, their co-tenants at the facility.

Free agent signees Zack Greinke and Hyun-jin Ryu will start the Dodgers' second game on Feb. 24, also against the White Sox at Camelback Ranch. Greinke will get the start and be followed by Ryu, as the Dodgers will piggyback their eight starters in some games in the early going, with only a few frames expected of each hurler.

Here are some other notes from Saturday:

  • For the first full squad workout, the Dodgers wore their game white uniforms and regular blue caps. The previous three workouts, with pitchers and catchers only, had the Dodgers in blue batting practice tops with either gray or white pants and the matching batting practice cap, either gray with a blue bill or blue with a white bill.
  • Mattingly wouldn't reveal exactly what was said during his first address to the entire team on Saturday, but did say he stressed the importance of not letting expectations getting in the way of the work needed to be done.

"As we're going to try to build this house, the way I hear it we're starting with the roof. We should probably put that foundation down there first. My country analysis is that were down there digging footers right now," he said. "Let's just make sure we keep our focus on what we need to do to get ready."
  • Mattingly said he planned to manage the playing time for Mark Ellis in a similar fashion as 2012, with one or two planned days off per week. That will allow playing time for both Skip Schumaker, a left-handed hitter, and Nick Punto, a switch-hitter.

"We'll layout where he's going to get his days. You sit there with Nick and Skip, who hit from the left side. There are ways to balance it out," Mattingly said. "It gives us some variety of lefty there with Nick able to play third, and Skip in the outfield."

Mattingly also said he felt comfortable with either Ellis, Schumaker, or Punto at the top of the lineup.
  • Both Kenley Jansen (ingrown toenail) and Chris Withrow (sore back) were held out of workouts Saturday, per Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. Jansen is expected to throw a bullpen session Sunday, but Withrow's injury is expected to keep him out longer.
  • Non-roster catcher Eliezer Alfonzo is the only one of 59 players who hasn't reported to camp. Alfonzo is still dealing with a family issue.
  • Longtime Dodgers player and coach Manny Mota and his wife Margarita celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday.
  • One other note I forgot to mention Friday. Among the position players Mattingly was happy to see in camp was infielder Ozzie Martinez, whom Mattingly managed with the Phoenix Desert Dogs in 2010, when Martinez was in the Marlins' system.
  • Photo day for the Dodgers is Sunday at Camelback Ranch, for the annual array of headshots and profile pictures you will see in front of various backdrops this season.
