The Dodgers confirmed on Tuesday the signing of right-handed relief pitcher Sean White to a minor league deal. The signing, which happened last week, was first reported by Matt Eddy of Baseball America.
The contract does not include an invitation to spring training, and is strictly a minor league contract.
White, who turns 32 in April, figures to add depth to the bullpen for Triple-A Albuquerque. He last pitched in the majors in 2010 with the Mariners. In 105 games, all relief appearances, with Seattle in parts of three years he was 4-4 with a 4.16 ERA, with 59 strikeouts and 51 walks in 134 innings.
Among the 641 pitchers to have thrown 100 major league innings from 2007-2012, White's strikeout rate of 10.2% of his batters faced ranks 629th.
Control has been a problem for White in the past two seasons in Triple A, with 73 walks against just 75 strikeouts in 120 innings with Colorado Springs (in the Rockies' system) in 2011 and Salt Lake (Angels) in 2012. In 29 games with Salt Lake last season, including two starts, White was 0-1 with an 8.12 ERA, 24 walks, 21 strikeouts in 37⅓ innings.
If White makes the Isotopes, Albuquerque will be his fourth Pacific Coast League team in four years.
