Spring training 2013: Vin Scully interview with Sandy Koufax to air during Dodgers vs. Angels broadcast

The Dodgers battle the Angels for two straight days beginning Thursday.

The Dodgers welcome the Angels to Camelback Ranch on Thursday, in the second game of spring training televised by Prime Ticket. Vin Scully will be on the call for the game, and during the broadcast will feature an interview between Scully and Sandy Koufax.

Notes

  • Tony Gwynn Jr., battling a groin injury, was held out of workouts on Thursday, but is getting closer to returning. "We're going to hold him out one more day. He's feeling better today. I'd like him to be ready Friday because we have two games tomorrow," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly.
  • Justin Sellers was also scratched on Thursday, as he was scheduled to play second base as a reserve. He is battling an ingrown toenail that made it difficult on Thrsday morning to even put on his shoe. "That didn't go real well," quipped Mattingly.
  • Clayton Kershaw starts for the Dodgers on the mound, and will be followed by Ted Lilly, making his first start of the spring. Other pitchers slated to pitch are Peter Moylan, Steve Ames, and Josh Wall.
  • A trio of pitchers from the minor league side will suit up for the Dodgers on Thursday: Right-handers Blake Johnson (No. 83) and Andres Santiago (No. 92), and left-hander Fabio Castro (No. 82).
  • Jerome Williams starts for the Angels on Thursday, and is expected to be followed on the mound by Brad Mills, Hiroyuki Kobayashi and R.J. Alvarez. Non-roster invitee Chad Cordero also made the trip with the Angels, as did minor league pitchers Mark Sappington (No. 25), Ben Fritz (No. 35), Michael Roth (No. 60), Ty Kelley (No. 79), Brandon Hynick (No. 80), and Jarret Grube (No. 90).
  • There will be no Albert Pujols, Mike Trout, or Josh Hamilton for the Angels here, and most of the reserves on the travel roster are minor leaguers. The only Halos reserves on the 40-man roster that made the trip to Glendale were pitcher Brad Mills, infielders Tommy Field and Luis Jimenez, and outfielder Kole Calhoun.
  • Old friend Trent Oeltjen, a non-roster invitee with the Angels, is here for the game as well.
  • Yasiel Puig is on the tentative travel roster for Friday as the Dodgers send a split squad to Tempe to play the Angels. That game will be televised by Fox Sports West, the Angels broadcast.
  • The Dodgers are off on Monday, though Mattingly said Aaron Harang will throw to hitters, likely from the minor league side, to stay on schedule in the starting rotation.
  • When discussing an error given to shortstop Dee Gordon on Wednesday on a long-hop throw that Dallas McPherson didn't field at first base, Mattingly thought it was a play that the first baseman should have made, and that it was tough to give Gordon an error on the throw. Asked if Mattingly, a nine-time Gold Glove winner at first base who turns 52 in April, would have made the play, the manager joked, "I can catch it if I can see it. Most of the time I can't see it. I still have good hands, I just can't see as well."
