Juan Abreu reassigned by Dodgers to minor league camp

The relief pitcher, who hadn't given up a run during spring training, had a 6.80 ERA in 42 games in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League in 2012.

The Dodgers made one more roster move on Sunday afternoon, as non-roster pitcher Juan Abreu was reassigned to minor league camp. With Abreu and the option of Javy Guerra on Sunday, the Dodgers now have 46 players left in major league camp, including nine non-roster invitees.

Abreu, who turns 28 in April, pitched fairly well in his six Cactus League games. He put up a 0.00 ERA in seven innings, with seven base runners allowed (five hits, two walks), and seven strikeouts. Abreu, who had a seven-game cup of coffee with the Astros in 2011 in his only major league experience, put up a 6.80 ERA in 42 games in Triple-A in 2012 for Oklahoma City (Astros) and Las Vegas (Blue Jays).

Manager Don Mattingly hinted at several weekend roster cuts on Friday night, when the Dodgers played two games for the first of two times over the weekend.

"I'd really like to get camp cut down. I'd really like to get down closer to our team. It's just that time. We're within two weeks, you'd kind of like to have your guys in the clubhouse. It's getting there."

But after Sunday's split squad action, the only two cuts made were Guerra and Abreu. But perhaps the timing simply wasn't right, with some of the potential casualties still on their way back from playing in Scottsdale, and the rest of the team and employees enjoying a family day barbecue outside team offices.

In other words, expect several more cuts this week, perhaps as early as Monday.
