Zack Greinke has surgery to repair broken collarbone

USA TODAY Sports

Greinke underwent a 90-minute procedure on Saturday in Los Angeles to repair his fractured left collarbone.

Dodgers right-handed pitcher Zack Greinke had successful surgery to repair a broken left collarbone on Saturday in Los Angeles, the team announced. As previously thought, Greinke is expected to miss eight weeks after the procedure.

The surgery was performed on Saturday by Dr. John Itamura and Dr. Neal ElAttrache at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles. The 90-minute procedure fixed the fracture of Greinke's left clavicle, and involved the placement of a metal plate to stabilize the fracture.

Greinke suffered the break in a collision with Carlos Quentin and ensuing brawl with the Padres on Thursday night at Petco Park in San Diego. Quentin was suspended for eight games for his actions during the brawl, though he is currently appealing the suspension.

The Dodgers placed Greinke on the disabled list on Friday, and called up relief pitcher Shawn Tolleson. Greinke's spot in the starting rotation comes up next on Tuesday, and manager Don Mattingly said on Saturday that Chris Capuano would make the start.
