Dodgers discuss adding relief options

USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers have used their bullpen to throw 10 innings in the last two days, including using five relief pitchers in each game.

The toll of Chris Capuano's early exit on the bullpen on Tuesday could result in a possible roster move prior to Wednesday's series finale. With five relievers pitching a combined seven innings on Tuesday after five relievers were used Monday, there is the possibility of the Dodgers recalling another reliever just to have another fresh arm to use in the bullpen.

Manager Don Mattingly met with general manager Ned Colletti after the game, and said they would discuss potentially adding a reliever prior to Wednesday night's game. But with staff ace Clayton Kershaw, who has pitched at least seven innings in each of his last five starts and 10 of his last 12, starting Wednesday and an off day coming Thursday, the Dodgers might be able to get by without a roster move for another day.

Mattingly said a few relievers would be unavailable Wednesday, which almost certainly means no Matt Guerrier (34 pitches Tuesday, 47 pitches in last two days) or Josh Wall (29 pitches Tuesday, 46 pitches in last two days).

"Kind of the way we used guys, it leaves us a pretty good bullpen tomorrow," Mattingly said.

Both Brandon League and Kenley Jansen pitched Tuesday, but it was the first outing for each of them in the last three days. Similarly, both J.P. Howell and the recently shaky Ronald Belisario have pitched once in the last three days.

If the Dodgers do decide to add someone, the new reliever would likely be someone from Triple-A Albuquerque like Steve Ames, who pitched an inning Tuesday night, or Chris Withrow, who pitched an inning Monday night. If the Dodgers decided to add a long reliever, Javy Guerra would be an option, as he last pitched on Saturday.
