1988 Dodgers Week 2 review: Mike Scioscia stays hot

The Dodgers' catcher reached base in nine of his 16 plate appearances during the week, and is hitting .414 through 12 games on the season.

The Dodgers split their six games this week, dropping two of three against the Padres in San Diego, then returning home to take two of three against the lowly Braves. The Dodgers' wins on Friday and Saturday against the Braves ran Atlanta's record to 0-10, the worst start in National League history.

Dodger Batter of the Week: I don't have many rules, but one of them is that a .563 on-base percentage gets you player of the week. Catcher Mike Scioscia takes the honors this week, by hitting .462/.563/.615.

Honorable mention goes to Pedro Guerrero, who hit .304 with seven runs batted in, and a game-winning home run on Wednesday to beat the Padres. On the season Guerrero is hitting .310/.375/.476 with 11 RBI in 12 games. "I wasn't looking for a home run," Guerrero told Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times. "The pitches I see now are just so big."

Dodger Pitcher of the Week: For the second straight week Orel Hershiser captures the award, with his complete game win over the Braves on Friday night. Hershiser is 3-0 with a 1.03 ERA, with 26⅓ innings in three starts.

Honorable mention goes to Fernando Valenzuela, who pitched a complete game against the Padres in San Diego on Thursday, but suffered the loss. Valenzuela gave up two runs in his eight innings, including a bases loaded walk in the seventh inning. Valenzuela threw 150 pitches, but manager Tommy Lasorda was amused by questions he should have removed the left-hander, telling the Times, "Who should have I brought in? (Brad) Havens?"

Week 2 Record: 3-3

18 runs scored (3.00 per game)
19 runs allowed (3.17 per game)
.475 pythagorean winning percentage

Seasonal Record: 8-4

49 runs scored (4.08 per game)
33 runs allowed (2.75 per game)
.673 pythagorean winning percentage (8-4)

Can't Drink to That: As the Dodgers returned home to start their homestand on Friday, the players found out that beer was banned in the clubhouse. "This change in policy has been under consideration ever since the California Court of Appeal ruled last year. . . . that 'where an employee consumes alcohol in the course and scope of his or her employment, the employer (can be held) liable for injuries proximately caused to members of the public by the consumption of alcohol'," Dodgers general counsel Sam Fernandez told Sam McManis of the Times.

Transactions: none this week

Game Results:

Upcoming Week: The Dodgers run the Chris Brown Gauntlet, finishing up their homestand with a four-game series against the Padres, followed by a three-game series at Candlestick Park against the Giants. There is rain in the forecast, but it's probably nothing.
