Adrian Gonzalez ends streak with skin infection

Gonzalez, Matt Kemp, and Carl Crawford are the only three Dodgers to appear in every game this season.

Before Saturday, Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez was the only Dodger to start every game. That streak ended on Saturday, as Gonzalez was a late scratch with a small skin infection on his right leg. But expect Gonzalez back in the lineup on Sunday. In fact, Gonzalez was almost in the lineup on Saturday.

"He had a little bit of an infection, and it kind of flared up on him," said manager Don Mattingly. "He was going to play, but he just couldn't get back. He literally got back 10 minutes before the game, and at that point it was too late."

Gonzalez had started all 59 games since joining the Dodgers last Aug. 25. On Saturday, he went to the hospital prior to the game to receive antibiotics and intravenous fluid, a procedure that usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes.

"They put two different types of antibiotics, but the second kind needed an hour and a half so it could drip down all the way through. You'd rather nip it in the bud than let it get worse," Gonzalez said. "It's not like it's bothering me. We just decided to be proactive. With an area that got infected, we didn't want it to get out of hand so we decided to go to the hospital."

Gonzalez entered Saturday's game in a double-switch in the seventh inning, and went 0-for-2.
