Clayton Kershaw placed on bereavement list

USA TODAY Sports

Kershaw will miss a minimum of three games, but is expected to make his next scheduled start, on Friday in San Francisco against the Giants.

One of the best starts of Clayton Kershaw's career on Sunday ended with an uncharacteristic postgame absence by the Dodgers ace, who had to leave abruptly to deal with a personal matter and didn't speak with reporters. On Monday the reason became clear, as Kershaw was placed on the bereavement list to make room on the roster for Hanley Ramirez, before the Dodgers opened a three-game series against the Rockies

By rule, Kershaw must miss a minimum of three games but a maximum of seven while on the bereavement list.

There were no further details given, as the team called it a "personal issue" that Kershaw would address when he returns to the team. Manager Don Mattingly said Kershaw is still in line to make his next start, on Friday in San Francisco against the Giants.

"As of right now we (expect Kershaw to start)," said Mattingly. "We'll see where that goes."

Starting pitcher Matt Magill, who was stellar in his major league debut on Saturday against the Brewers, remains on the roster, though his rotation spot will be skipped with Thursday's off day. Magill could start in place of Kershaw on Friday if Kershaw isn't back with the team, but Mattingly also suggested a relief role for Magill for the next week or so.

"We would consider using him (in relief)," Mattingly said. "We don't have him slotted to start again. We would use him in the meantime until whenever we make our decisions."

Magill, who threw a bullpen session on Monday, continues to prepare as a starter. but is willing to work in relief if it means staying in the majors.

"I'm just going to be here and prepare every day like normal. Whatever happens, happens," Magill said. "I just want to be here, and help the team win as much as I can. If they think my stuff is good enough to be here, and I believe it is, then I'd rather be here in any role. That works for me."
