Dodgers have owned Pirates in Los Angeles

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-US PRESSWIRE

Starting pitching has been a big reason why the Dodgers have beaten the Pirates in 14 of their last 16 games at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers look to snap their two-game losing streak on Friday night as they host the Pirates at Dodger Stadium. Los Angeles also looks to continue its home dominance of Pittsburgh that has gone on for the past decade.

The Dodgers are 28-7 in their last 35 home games against the Pirates, dating back to 2003. They have won 12 of their last 13 home series against the Pirates, dating back to 2002, including winning each of the last six series.

Pittsburgh was swept at Dodger Stadium in the second series of the year for both teams in 2012, and the Dodgers have beaten the Pirates six straight times at Chavez Ravine. They are 14-2 in their last 16 home games against Pittsburgh, dating back to 2008, and starting pitching has been a big reason why.

Dodgers starting pitchers have allowed two runs or less in 14 of their last 16 games against the Pirates at home, with a cumulative 2.36 ERA during that span, to go along with 83 strikeouts and 25 walks.

Zack Greinke looks to continue that run as he makes his Dodgers debut on Friday night. If Greinke can last at least six innings and give up no more than three earned runs, the Dodgers will have quality starts in each of their first four games for the first time in 41 years.

In 1972 the Dodgers opened the year with five consecutive quality starts, and a 4-1 start.

On the opposite side of that spectrum is Jonathan Sanchez, who had one quality start in his 15 starts last year, and even that was a clunker. He allowed four runs, three earned, in six innings, and he had more walks (four) than strikeouts (three)

Sanchez starts Friday for Pittsburgh, on his continued quest to find the strike zone. He is coming off a dreadful year in which he went 1-9 with an 8.07 ERA with the Royals and Rockies. His teams were 3-12 in games he started, including losses in his last eight starts.
