Dodgers 5/12/13 minor league report - Quakes and Loons both pitch shutouts

Jarret Martin threw 6.2 scoreless innings for the Quakes while Venezuelan teenagers Jonathan Martinez and Miguel Sulbaran combined on a 4-hit shutout for the Loons

Minor League Player of the DayMiguel Sulbaran (LoA) - 4 IP, 0 Runs, 1 Hit, 1 Walk, 2 K's. Sulbaran piggy backed off of fellow Venezuelan Jonathan Martinez and completed the Loons shutout with 4 innings of 1 hit ball. While the 19 year old has found the Midwest League to be a little more challenging than the rookie leagues, he continues to hold his own and has not given up more than 3 runs in any outing this season.

AAA – The Isotopes continue to struggle with their less potent offense as Albuquerque fell to the 51's (Mets) 4 to 3 on Sunday. The loss was the club's 3rd in a row, and 6th in their last 7 games. A couple of Isotope hitters did have good days at the plate, however, as Nick Buss and Tony Gwynn both went 3 for 4. While Gwynn "only" had 3 singles, Buss actually fell a triple shy of the cycle as he homered and doubled in this game. On the mound starter Anthony Ortega allowed just 1 run on 2 hits, but he only lasted 3 innings and took the loss. Steve Smith had a rough outing as he gave up the other 3 runs, while Geison Aguasviva finished the pitching duties with 2 scoreless frames.

AA – The Lookouts and Blue Wahoos (Reds) were involved in a tight battle most of Sunday, but Chattanooga put up 5 runs in the 9th to come away with a 10 - 4 victory. C.J. Retherford had the big hit in the final frame as he cleared the bases with a 3-run double, and Jan Vazquez followed that up with a 2-run homer. Chris Jacobs and Miguel Rojas also homered in this game, while Blake Smith went 2 for 4 with a double and drove in 2. Joc Pederson, who now has 6th multi-hit games in his last 7 contests, reached base 3 times thanks to a couple of singles and a walk. On the mound Zach Lee had trouble finding the plate and after throwing 89 pitches he didn't make it out of the 4th. Overall he allowed 4 hits, 5 walks, and 3 runs although he did strike out 6. A trio of relievers got through the rest of the game, including Michael Thomas who struck out 4 and picked up the win after punching out 4 batters over 2.1 frames.

HiA – The Quakes shut out the Storm (Padres) 8 to 0 on Sunday to get starter Jarret Martin his first win of the season. Martin allowed 5 hits and 1 walk over 6.2 scoreless frames, striking out 6 in the process. He also had a 13 to 0 groundout to flyout ratio so he was definitely keeping the ball down. Eric Eadington did not allow a hit in his 1.1 innings of relief, and Freddie Cabrera tossed the final frame to close out the win. Rancho pounded out 14 hits in this one, with 3 of them coming from Bobby Coyle as he hit a 2-run homer and a double to fall a triple shy of the cycle. Ryan Mount stayed hot as he also hit a homer, a 3-run shot, while Angelo Songco went 3 for 5 with a triple.

LoA – The Loons snapped their 9 game losing streak with ease on Sunday as Great Lakes embarrassed the Lugnuts (Blue Jays) 10 to 0. Pitching was the story of the game for the Loons as Jonathan Martinez and Miguel Sulbaran, two teenagers from Venezuela, combined to shutout the opposition. 18 year old Martinez started off the game with 5 scoreless innings, allowing just 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 1. 19 year old Sulbaran then took over in the 6th and was even better as he gave up just 1 hit and 1 walk over the next 4 innings to complete the shutout. The offense only had two extra base hits in this game even though they put up 10 runs, with one of them being a 2-run homer by Pat Stover. Jeremy Rathjen drove in two and had the other extra base hit, a double, while Tyler Ogle collected 3 RBI's with a couple of singles.

Coming upChris Reed takes the mound for the Lookouts on Monday, and Ralston Cash throws for the Loons. Duke von Schamann will get the ball for the Quakes while the Albuquerque starter is TBD.
