Cardinals 5, Dodgers 3: Pete Kozma doubles his pleasure

USA Today

The Cardinals shortstop tied a Dodger Stadium record on Sunday, and snapped a streak for Clayton Kershaw.

Pete Kozma and the Cardinals got the best of Clayton Kershaw on Sunday, and the Dodgers couldn't find a way for Adrian Gonzalez to bat in every run-scoring situation, leading to a 5-3 win for St. Louis to capture the weekend series at Dodger Stadium.

Gonzalez homered in the first inning for a 2-0 lead, his second home run in as many days and his team-leading sixth long ball of the season.

Kershaw saw his streak of 22 consecutive games with three or fewer earned runs allowed snapped, as he allowed four runs in his seven innings. Entering the game on Sunday, Kershaw had yet to allow a run or a walk in his two daytime starts, over 17 innings. But the third inning began with a walk, a double, and another walk. Kozma followed with a bases-clearing double and a 3-2 Cardinals lead.

Gonzalez tied the game with an RBI single in the sixth inning, improving his batting average with runners in scoring position to .450 (18-for-40) this season.

But Kozma doubled two more times and scored in both the seventh and ninth innings to give the Cardinals a 5-3 advantage.

Kozma's three doubles tied a Dodger Stadium record, done 22 other times in the 52 years of its existence. Before Kozma, the last to hit three doubles at Dodger Stadium was Josh Rutledge of the Rockies on Aug. 7, 2012. The last Dodger to do it was Matt Kemp on Sep. 22, 2011 against the Giants.

The Cardinals pitched around Gonzalez in the seventh inning, leading to a bases loaded situation that the Dodgers couldn't cash in. Skip Schumaker, starting in place of Matt Kemp in center field, struck out against Trevor Rosenthal to end the threat.

One inning later Kemp, as a pinch hitter, grounded into a double play against Rosenthal.

The rest of the Dodgers aside from Gonzalez are hitting .199 (71-for-357) with runners in scoring position this season.
