Julio Urias - Jared Sandler | ESPN 100.9

LHP Julio Urias, who is 16 going on 17 (not until August), made his professional debut and pitched well, Duke von Schamann has another great May start, Yasiel Puig has a solid game and Matt Wallach homers in loss

Minor League Player of the DayJulio Urias LHP - Great Lakes Loons - 3 innings pitched, 2 hits, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts - to say it was a surprise when his name popped up as the starting pitcher for the Loons would be underselling the word surprise. Urias appears to be the youngest professional player playing in the U.S.

AAA Blake Johnson pitched well enough to win most games in the PCL but he got the loss as the Isotopes went down by a 3 to 2 score against the Sounds (Brewers). Johnson allowed just 2 runs in 6 innings, striking out 6 and walking 2. The solo home run allowed by Anthony Ortega would prove to be the decider. Matt Wallach hit a solo home run and Nick Buss scored the only other run as went 2 for 4.

AA – The Lookouts fell behind twice by 2 runs but they came back each time as Chattanooga downed the Blue Wahoos (Reds) 6 to 4. Starter Steve Smith making his first start for the Lookouts gave up 4 runs in 4.1 innings on 4 hits, 3 BB and 3 strikeouts. But the bullpen would pitch 4.2 innings of scoreless ball with only 1 hit allowed. Luis Vasquez got the win, pitching 2.2 innings, Scott Elbert, who could be gearing up for a return to the Dodgers, pitched his first back to back games, retiring the one batter he faced and Yimi Garcia picked up his 10th save, going 1.2 innings and getting 3 strikeouts. Yasiel Puig got the key hit as he doubled in 2 in the 6th inning to tie the game at 4 and then he scored the tie-breaking run. Joc Pederson went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Rafael Ynoa led off the game with home run and Angelo Songco hit his first AA home run, as he homered in his first game for the 2013 Lookouts.

HiA – The Quakes got a split of their four game series as they defeated Rawhide (Dbacks) 8 to 1 on Sunday afternoon. While the bats did a great job, the star of the game was Duke von Schamann. He pitched 7 innings, gave up just one hit, a solo shot that led off the game, walking none and striking out 9. von Schamann won his 7th straight decision and is 5-0 in May. Eric Eadington and Pedro Baez pitched a solo scoreless inning apiece. As for the hitters, Chris Jacobs made his Rancho Cucamonga debut special by going 2 for 3 with his first home run (so both Jacobs and Angelo Songco homered in their respective first games with their new teams). Darnell Sweeney went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Noel Cuevas hit a triple with 2 RBI. Jon Garcia went 1 for 3 with a double. And Casio Grider went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.

LoA – The Loons offense sputtered as they could only put across a single run in their extra-inning loss the Dragons (Reds) 2 to 1 on Sunday. But the lead story was 16 year-old LHP Julio Urias's professional debut. Urias was signed last August, the Mexico native's appearance was a surprise and the Twitterverse went wild as word got out that he was starting. Urias didn't disappoint, as noted above, his scoreless outing produced only 3 baserunners and 6 strikeouts. But the day also marked RHP Alan Garcia's 2013 debut, the 2012 22nd round draftee out of Azuza Pacific and No. 116 on Brandon Lennox's list, pitched 2 innings, with a walk, a hit and 3 strikeouts. Scott Griggs pitched the 12th inning and he gave up the run that lost the game. Six different Loons had a single hit but that wasn't enough as they could only put across that solo run. Tyler Ogle got one of the hits and he scored the only run.

Coming upAaron Laffey starts for the Isotopes, the Lookouts have not announced their starter. James Campbell starts a Memorial Day afternoon game for the Quakes while Angel Sanchez starts a holiday matinee for the Loons.

Minor League TransactionsAA/A - Loons activated pitchers Julio Urias (from Dodgers DSL team) and Alan Garcia (from Rookie League Ogden Raptors) while promoting pitcher Joel Lima to the Lookouts and putting Ralston Cash on the disabled list. Lookouts placed RHP Kyle Cofield on the disabled list.
