Angels 4, Dodgers 3: Mark Trumbo, Jered Weaver prove inhospitable hosts

USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers have lost 18 of their last 25 games in Anaheim, dating back to 2005.

Mark Trumbo's two-run home run in the fifth inning gave the Angels a lead they never relinquished, and the Dodgers' modest two-game winning streak was snapped with a 4-3 loss to the Halos on Wednesday night in Anaheim.

Adrian Gonzalez and Scott Van Slyke each hit solo home runs off Angels close Ernesto Frieri in the ninth inning, but he was able to record his 11th save.

The Angels cashed in doubles by catcher Chris Iannetta and Eric Aybar in the second inning for a one-run lead, and for a while it looked like that might hold up.

Jered Weaver, in his first major league start since Apr. 7, retired the first 12 batters he faced before Andre Ethier broke up the perfect game with a double high off the right field wall to open the fifth. After Matt Kemp and Scott Van Slyke struck out the rally looked dead, but Skip Schumaker softly lined a single to center to tie the game at 1-1. A.J. Ellis followed with a single, then Luis Cruz added a single of the infield variety to load the bases, but Carl Crawford grounded out with the bases loaded to end the threat.

The Dodgers this season are 6-for-46 (.130) with the bases loaded.

After a walk to Albert Pujols in the bottom of the inning, Chris Capuano served up the two-run home run to Trumbo, his 12th of the season. Capuano on the season has allowed six home runs in 33 innings.

Trumbo knocked in an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, giving him three runs batted in.

Notes

  • Kemp was removed in the seventh inning on a double switch, the third time in five games he has left a game early. He walked off the field with trainer Nancy Paterson Flynn, though it was unclear whether or not it was related to his getting hit by a pitch in the right elbow on Tuesday, which led to numbness in fingers. At the plate Wednesday, Kemp was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.
  • Adrian Gonzalez added a solo home run to pull the Dodgers within two runs in the ninth inning, and over his last five games is hitting .579 (11-for-19) with six extra-base hits.
  • Cruz, who started three consecutive games for the first time since Apr. 13-15, went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to four games.
  • Weaver improved to 26-8 with a 2.02 ERA in his home starts since the beginning of the 2010 season. During that span, the Angels are 36-11 in Weaver starts in Anaheim.
  • The Dodgers fell to 16-31 all-time in Anaheim.
