Dodgers place Ted Lilly on DL, activate Clayton Kershaw from bereavement list

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Matt Magill will start for the Dodgers on Saturday night against the Giants.

The Dodgers activated Clayton Kershaw from the bereavement list just in time to start Friday night's game against the Giants at AT&T Park in San Francisco, and to make room the Dodgers placed starting pitcher Ted Lilly on the 15-day disabled list with a right rib cage strain.

Lilly was one of a trio of potential DL candidates for the Dodgers, as second baseman Mark Ellis and left fielder Carl Crawford are both out again on Friday. Ellis is out of the lineup for a sixth straight game on Friday with a strained right quad, while Crawford is out of the lineup for the third consecutive game with tightness in his right hamstring.

Kershaw was placed on the bereavement list on Monday after his father passed away, to make room for the activation of shortstop Hanley Ramirez from the disabled list. Kershaw last pitched Sunday and is starting Friday night on regular rest. He missed the minimum three games required of placement on the bereavement list.

Lilly is 0-1 with a 5.63 ERA in his two starts. He allowed five runs in just three innings on Monday against the Rockies, and afterward revealed he had tightness in his neck and back. It was something Lilly felt after his first start in New York but didn't tell anybody, thinking it would go away quickly.

"There are things that come up and then they go away. You try not to make a big deal out of little things. Most of the time they're nothing," Lilly said on Monday. "I got caught off guard. I was confident that this would get better."

Lilly had an MRI exam with team physician Dr. Robert Watkins on Tuesday, and received a cortisone injection in his right rib cage. He was shut down from throwing for two days before getting reevaluated. His DL stint is retroactive to Apr. 30, meaning the earliest he is eligible to be activated is May 15.

With Lilly on the disabled list, that means Matt Magill gets his second major league start on Saturday night, one week after his debut. Magill struck out seven Brewers and allowed just two runs in 6⅔ innings on Apr. 27.
