Dodgers decide to keep Peter Moylan, option Javy Guerra

USA Today Sports

Moylan, 34, could have become a free agent had he not been added to the active roster by Saturday. Moylan will be the 20th Dodger to throw a pitch in 2013.

The Dodgers on Friday made a roster move to keep some bullpen depth, as they selected the contract of Peter Moylan from Triple-A Albuquerque, and optioned Javy Guerra back to the Isotopes.

Moylan signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers on Jan. 15, and had an out clause in his contract that would have allowed him to become a free agent if not added to the roster by Saturday.

Moylan has been quite effective in Triple-A Albuquerque this season, at 2-1 with a 3.52 ERA, two saves, 24 strikeouts and eight unintentional walks in 23. innings in the hitter friendly Pacific Coast League.

When healthy he was one of the most effective relief pitchers in baseball since 2006, and his 63.9% ground ball rate is near the very top of MLB. Moylan had surgeries on his back and in his right shoulder to repair a torn labrum and rotator cuff that limited him to a combined 13⅓ major league innings in 2011-2012. In spring training Moylan said he expected to be stronger in 2013, his second year after shoulder surgery.

"I saw that when I had my elbow surgery of 2008. I came back in 2009, and the first half of the year I battled through. It wasn't until the second half, after the All-Star break, that I really hit my stride. I'm hoping it's the same with my shoulder," Moylan said. "This is the first time in two years in coming to spring training I feel like I'm healthy."

To make room for Moylan on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred relief pitcher Scott Elbert to the 60-day disabled list. Elbert has been on the disabled list retroactive to Mar. 26, so he has already served 60 days. He is currently on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque and whenever he is ready can be activated.

Guerra was 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in nine games with the Dodgers this season, with 12 strikeouts and six walks in 10⅔ innings.
