C.J. Retherford, Ryan Acosta suspended 50 games for violating minor league drug policy

Both minor leaguers were released by the Dodgers in the last week.

A pair of minor leaguers released by the Dodgers this week won't be playing for another organization anytime soon. Relief pitcher Ryan Acosta and infielder C.J. Retherford were both suspended 50 games on Friday for violating the minor league drug prevention and treatment program.

Both Acosta and Retherford tested positive for an amphetamine. The Dodgers declined comment on the suspensions.

Acosta, 24, began the season in Double-A Chattanooga and was demoted to Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. Across both levels, he was 0-1 with a 13.25 ERA in 14 games, with 16 strikeouts and 10 walks in 18⅓ innings.

Retherford, 27, hit .219/.273/.404 in 47 games with Chattanooga, with 11 doubles, four home runs and 26 RBI. He played 46 games at third base. Retherford in 2012 hit 20 home runs and 19 doubles in 72 games with Rancho Cucamonga, but then upon promotion to Double-A hit just .250/.311/.378 in 44 games.

Retherford was ranked the Dodgers' 89th-best prospect during the offseason, while Acosta was No. 139.
