Diamondbacks 3, Dodgers 2: Paul Goldschmidt, ruiner of dreams

Stephen Dunn

The Dodgers are 5-16 against the National League West and have lost seven straight games against divisional foes.

Paul Goldschmidt made an even deeper imprint on a series he already owned on Wednesday night, hitting two home runs to lead the Diamondbacks over the Dodgers 3-2 to complete the sweep at Dodger Stadium. The loss was the season-worst seventh in a row for the Dodgers.

Everything seemed to be going swimmingly for Clayton Kershaw, who took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning, but after Dee Gordon booted a grounder by Didi Gregorius to open the frame Goldschmidt followed with a game-tying home run into the left field pavilion.

After victimizing Chris Capuano, Brandon League, and Kershaw in the series, Goldschmidt took aim at Kenley Jansen in the eighth inning, and put another one over the wall for a 3-2 Arizona lead.

That made a winner out of Wade Miley, who pitched into the eighth inning for his third win of the season. Brad Ziegler and Heath Bell combined to record the final four outs to close out the game. Skip Schumaker led off the ninth inning with a double, but he as the tying run was stranded at second base.

Goldschmidt in the three-game series in Los Angeles hit .538 (7-for-13) with four home runs and nine runs batted in. He drove in three games in every game of the series.

Notes

  • Kershaw allowed two runs, one earned, in seven innings, leaving him one out shy of 1,000 innings pitched in his career. Among starting pitchers since 1920 with at least 1,000 innings, Whitey Ford has the best ERA at 2.7451. At 999⅔ career innings, Kershaw's ERA stands at 2.7279.
  • Kershaw booted a ground ball by Goldschmidt in the first inning for his first fielding error since Aug. 1, 2010, and the third error of his career. As noted by Bob Timmermann, Kershaw went 117 chances in between errors.
  • Dee Gordon, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored on Wednesday, was picked off of first base in the fifth inning, and since he made a move toward second base it counted as a caught stealing, the first for the Dodgers since Apr. 14. The Dodgers were successful in their last 12 stolen base attempts.
