Dodgers vs. Rockies: A.J. Ellis out for third straight game

USA TODAY Sports

Ellis, nursing an oblique injury, is seventh in MLB in starts behind the plate and eighth in catcher innings.

The Dodgers look for their second straight win on Saturday as they send Zack Greinke to the mound against Jhoulys Chacin of the Rockies.

The Dodgers welcome back Carl Crawford to the lineup after general soreness kept him out on Friday night. But the Dodgers are still without A.J. Ellis, out of the lineup for a third consecutive day with an oblique injury. The good news for Ellis is that he was able to hit off a tee on Saturday with no oblique pain, per Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.

Tim Federowicz, who at 3-for-22 has been unable yet to translate his Triple-A success into major league production, gets his fifth start of the year behind the plate.

Friday's win at Coors Field snapped a seven-game losing streak by the Dodgers against the National League West. The Dodgers had lost 13 of their last 15 against divisional opponents. On the season the Dodgers have won just one of seven series against NL West foes, with a 6-16 record.

Zack Greinke takes the mound for the Dodgers, and takes his .500 batting average (5-for-10) to the plate. The only major league batters with a higher average than Greinke are Zack Duke (1-for-1, 1.000) and Doug Fister (2-for-3, .667). Greinke's three-game hitting streak matches Clayton Kershaw (also active) for the longest by a Dodgers pitcher this season. Kershaw also had a four-game hitting streak in each of the last two seasons.

The longest hitting streak by a Dodgers pitcher since moving to Los Angeles was an eight-game streak by Rick Sutcliffe in 1979 during his National League Rookie of the Year campaign.

Former Twins outfielder Michael Cuddyer has faced Greinke by far the most among Rockies, with 34 plate appearances, but has hit just .242/.265/.364. Carlos Gonzalez, back in the lineup on Saturday after sitting to start Friday's game, is 3-for-9 against Greinke. Troy Tulowitzki is 2-for-13, Dexter Fowler is 1-for-12, and Todd Helton is 0-for-9.

Among Dodgers against Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin, the ones with the most success are Andre Ethier (7-for-16 with two doubles and a home run, .438/.625/.750), Mark Ellis (3-for-3), Adrian Gonzalez (2-for-3) and Nick Punto (2-for-2).
