Dodgers-Diamondbacks brawl: The Arizona reaction

Stephen Dunn

A look at reaction to the brawl between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks from the Arizona perspective, including a great quote from central figure Miguel Montero.

The Dodgers were involved in their second major brawl of the season on Tuesday night, and while it appears there were no major injuries suffered this time around, there was still plenty of ill will to go around between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks. Here is how Arizona reacted.

Miguel Montero, who was hit in the back by Zack Greinke, exchanged words with Greinke at home plate after Greinke was hit in the seventh inning, the play that set off the major brawl. It was Montero who had the line of the night, per Beth Harris of the Associated Press:

"It got pretty ugly," Montero said. "They came out of nowhere, just throwing punches. When everybody was trying to break it up, they just kept coming and throwing punches. It was like 25 against 72, because all the DL guys were out there, too. I guess their arms were feeling pretty good because they were throwing good punches."

Some of those punches may or may not have come from Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, who at the very least was heavily involved in the proceedings. Check it out at either 0:28 or about 5:35 of the MLB.com video:

Ian Kennedy didn't appreciate Montero getting hit, per Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic:

"What he did to Miggy was obviously not right," Kennedy said. "I wanted to throw inside just kind of to send a message, but not to hit the guy, and it just kind of got away from me a little bit. I was really just trying to go inside because I didn’t think it was right what he did to Miggy."

Kennedy also said of his pitch near Greinke's head, "I honestly had no idea that it was that high until I saw the replay," per the AP report.

Eric Hinske, who was apparently hit by Yasiel Puig, told Piecoro he thinks punishment is coming for Puig, saying, "A couple of times he came back in and threw some more. We’ll see what happens. He’ll probably get suspended for that, I’m sure. Anytime you throw a punch you’re going to get in trouble."

Unlike the last brawl the Dodgers had, on Apr. 11 in San Diego, there is one more game left in the series. Will Wednesday night bring more fireworks to Dodger Stadium? What we do know is that Hyun-jin Ryu starts for the Dodgers against undefeated Patrick Corbin for Arizona.
