Dodgers vs. Giants: June swooners meet at Dodger Stadium

USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers are 1-5 against the Giants this season, including 1-2 at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers and Giants have the two highest payrolls in the National League West, and were thought to battle it out for the division all year. We know how it hasn't worked out at all for the Dodgers so far, at 10 games under .500, but the Giants have been disappointing in their own right this season.

The Giants are currently 38-37 and tied for second place in the division, but they have been outscored by 15 runs on the season and come to Dodger Stadium beginning Monday night with a 14-22 road record that is tied for fourth-west in the National League.

In June the Giants are 9-12 and have been outscored 88-75.

In June the Dodgers are 9-12 and have been outscored 86-77.

The misery loves company tour begins Monday night at Dodger Stadium, with Hyun-jin Ryu facing off against Madison Bumgarner.

Ryu hasn't won a game since May 28, though each of his three outings since have been quality starts, with a 3.20 ERA during that span. Ryu has five consecutive quality starts, and he hasn't allowed more than three runs in any start since May 5, against the Giants.

San Francisco has gotten their hits off Ryu, totaling 19 in two starts, but outside of Hunter Pence (4-for-6, two doubles against Ryu) they have all been singles. Marco Scutaro and Andres Torres are each 3-for-6 against Ryu, while Joaquin Arias is 2-for-3 and Buster Posey is 2-for-5 with a walk.

Pablo Sandoval, who missed 14 games with a left foot strain, will be activated from the disabled list before Monday's game. He is 1-for-5 with a walk against Ryu.

Madison Bumgarner, meanwhile, has mostly had his way with the Dodgers. He is 6-2 with a 2.53 ERA in nine games, including eight starts against Los Angeles in his career. In each of his last two starts against the Dodgers he has pitched eight scoreless innings with no walks, including an Apr. 2 win over Ryu.

Not surprisingly Bumgarner has neutralized left-handers Andre Ethier (2-for-16 with a double and five strikeouts) and Adrian Gonzalez (2-for-14 with a double). But right-handers Mark Ellis (1-for-12) and Hanley Ramirez (1-for-11 with a walk) have struggled against Bumgarner, too.

Jerry Hairston is 3-for-10 with a double against Bumgarner and Juan Uribe, who doubled twice Sunday and makes his fifth straight start on Monday, is 3-for-11 against the southpaw.

Notes

  • The Dodgers have won their last two contests but have still won three games in a row just once this season, a sweep of the Pirates at Dodger Stadium from Apr. 5-7.
  • Ramirez, who hit .500/.542/1.000 with three home runs and seven RBI last week, lost out to Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez for National League Player of the Week honors, though Ramirez was listed among the noteworthy performers.
  • Chris Capuano, who was 1-0 and pitched 11 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and no walks, including a Sunday start in three days rest, was not recognized in the Player of the Week honors.
  • Yasiel Puig hasn't yet faced Bumgarner but so far this season is 11-for-20 (.550) against left-handed pitchers with two home runs and two doubles. In the first inning, Puig is 10-for-15 (.667) with a walk, a home run and a double.
  • Over at Baseball Nation, Grant Brisbee tackled the question of whether or not Puig with his limited time in the majors should be on the National League All-Star team.
  • With 52 total bases, Puig is tied for eighth most total bases through 19 career games. David Schoenfield at ESPN compared Puig to the rest of the list.
  • Puig's swing is analyzed by ESPN the Magazine with the help of Sports Science.
  • The Dodgers on Monday announced the signing of catcher and right-handed pitcher Dimitrios Papantonopoulos, an undrafted free agent out of Cal State Dominguez Hills who put up a 2.71 ERA in 12 games in 2013, including nine starts, with 50 strikeouts and 18 walks in 69⅔ innings under the name Dimtri De La Fuente.
  • Sandy Koufax made his major league debut 58 years ago today, as the 19-year-old threw two scoreless innings against the Braves in Milwaukee.
  • The Giants optioned relief pitcher Jean Machi to Triple-A Fresno before Monday's game, and recalled George Kontos from Fresno. Kontos was suspended three games by Major League Baseball on June 12 for intentionally throwing at Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates, but Kontos, who was optioned to Triple-A the same day he was suspended, is appealing that suspension and eligible to pitch.
