Hanley Ramirez gets day off, Andre Ethier moves to left field

Lisa Blumenfeld

After playing nine games in the last eight days, the red-hot Hanley Ramirez is out of the starting lineup on Thursday night for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers open their four-game series against the Phillies, and their lineup features a pair of distinctions. The lineup's hottest hitter, Hanley Ramirez, will not start Thursday, and Andre Ethier has moved to left field for the first time in five seasons.

Ramirez has a nine-game hitting streak, during which he is hitting .485 (16-for-33), and has driven in a run in six straight games. But he is also just over three weeks back from the disabled list with a left hamstring strain and had played nine games in the last eight days. It was a planned day off for Ramirez, not that it made it any easier for manager Don Mattingly.

"I don’t want to do it, but I feel like I need to do it," Mattingly said, per Pedro Moura of the Orange County Register.

With Matt Kemp back in center field on Thursday, the Dodgers made a change, with Ethier moving to left and Yasiel Puig going back to right field, utilizing his superior arm. Puig started 20 games in right field and one in left.

Ethier's last start in left field came on July 30, 2008.
