Dodgers 4, Phillies 3: Hanley Ramirez does it all

Lisa Blumenfeld

The Dodgers have won the last three games they have faced Cliff Lee, despite his 1.19 ERA against them in seven career starts including the playoffs.

Hanley Ramirez continued his blistering pace on Saturday night, leading the Dodgers to a 4-3 victory over the Phillies at Dodger Stadium, the seventh win in the team's last eight games. Ramirez scored the winning run from second base with one out in the ninth inning on a single to shallow right field by A.J. Ellis.

The game probably should not have come to the bottom of the ninth, but we'll get to that in a moment.

After a one-out single by Yasiel Puig and a walk by Adrian Gonzalez in the first inning, Ramirez greeted Phillies starter Cliff Lee with one of the hardest hit balls of the season.

The home run to dead center gave the Dodgers a 3-1 lead. Ramirez also doubled and singled to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, during which time he is hitting .500 (20-for-40) with five home runs. In his career against Lee he is 7-for-13 (.538) with a pair of home runs.

Ramirez even stole a base on Saturday, his third of the season.

Hyun-jin Ryu held the Phillies mostly in check, save for a couple of pitches to Chase Utley. The Phillies second baseman hit a pair of solo home runs, but that was all Ryu would allow. Ryu lasted seven innings and pitched his seventh straight quality start.

Ryu has a 1.90 ERA in nine starts at Dodger Stadium this season, with 49 strikeouts and 17 walks in 61⅔ innings.

The Dodgers nursed the 3-2 lead into the ninth inning and turned to Kenley Jansen, pitching his sixth game in eight days. Jansen was let down by three misplays in the inning, one by each of the three outfielders:

  • Puig couldn't field a single by Michael Young to open the inning, allowing him to get in scoring position.
  • Matt Kemp caught a fly ball for the second out but with Young on third base threw home, or at least tried to. The throw was well up the first base line then bounced away from Ellis, allowing Young to score easily.
  • Domonic Brown hit a catchable fly ball to the wall in left center field but Andre Ethier couldn't corral it, and Brown made it to third for a triple.

Jansen got stuck with his second blown save in seven attempts since being named closer, but recovered to strike out Delmon Young, keeping the go-ahead run stranded at third base, leading to the bottom of the ninth.

Ramirez opened with a leadoff single against Justin De Fratus, then after Kemp struck out Ethier walked. Ellis singled to shallow right field for the club's second walk-off win of the year.
