MLB Draft 2013: Dodgers make first two picks Thursday

Mike Stobe

The Dodgers pick No. 18 and No. 56 on Thursday in the first two rounds of the 2013 MLB Draft.

The 2013 MLB Draft begins on Thursday night, and the first 73 picks will be televised on MLB Network and shown on MLB.com. Coverage begins at 3 p.m. PT with a draft preview show, and the picks themselves begin at 4 p.m. PT.

Thursday will feature the first two rounds, plus the supplemental round and a pair of competitive balance rounds.

The Dodgers have two picks on Thursday: their first and second-round selections, No. 18 and No. 56 overall.

The Dodgers have had the No. 18 pick three times in the past, including in 2012 when they picked shortstop Corey Seager out of high school in North Carolina. At 19 his future seems bright, and at the very least more promising than the other two, who never made the majors.

In 1973 the Dodgers picked high school catcher Ted Farr out of Spokane. He hit .270/.390/.521 with 18 home runs in 86 games as a 22-year-old with Double-A San Antonio, but arm problems forced him out of the game. That was his final professional season.

In 1983 the Dodgers drafted Wichita State left-handed pitcher Erik Sonberg. He was 16-31 with a 5.97 ERA in five seasons with the Dodgers and never got past Triple-A before he was released. The Red Sox picked No. 19 that year, and picked a pitcher from Texas named Roger Clemens.

The Dodgers have picked No. 56 twice previously. The last time was in 2009 when they picked outfielder Blake Smith, who is hitting .241/.330/.369 at age 25 in Double-A Chattanooga and known usually as the other guy in the Lookouts outfield with Joc Pederson and Yasiel Puig.

In 1969 the Dodgers drafted right-handed New Jersey high school pitcher Al Dawson. He was 10-1 with a 2.56 ERA in low Class-A at age 17 and was 17-6 with a 2.47 ERA at age 18 in Class-A, but after age 20 he was out of baseball.
