2013 MLB Draft: Dodgers plan to use Tom Windle as starter

USA TODAY Sports

The second round pick by he Dodgers relies on a fastball, slider, and change. He threw the first nine-inning no-hitter in his school's history in March.

The Dodgers took University of Minnesota left-handed pitcher Tom Windle with their second-round pick on Thursday. The 21-year-old hurler was used as both starter and reliever in college, but the Dodgers insist Windle will remain a starter.

"He has good size [6-4, 210] and a plus slider. He just needs to be more consistent," Dodgers vice president of scouting Logan White told Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. "If we put him in the bullpen, yeah, he could get here real fast. That's not our intention."

Windle played baseball and hockey at Osseo High School in Minnesota and was drafted in the 28th round by the White Sox in 2010, but did not sign.

Windle was 6-4 with a 2.14 ERA in 14 starts as a junior in 2013, but was used primarily in relief in his first two seasons in college. In his three years with the Gophers, Windle was 15-11 with three saves and a 2.26 ERA in 51 games, including 20 starts.

He threw the first nine-inning no-hitter in Minnesota history on Mar. 8 against Western Illinois, and led the Big Ten in strikeouts in his junior season.

"My style of pitching is pretty simple. I trust what I have," Windle said in an interview with the Big Ten Network. "When I'm out there I don't think too much. I just know I want to attack the batter."
