2013 MLB Draft: Dodgers pick 1B Cody Bellinger in 4th round

Bellinger, the son of former major leaguer Clay Bellinger, is the Dodgers' first high school pick after three college players in the first three rounds.

After selecting three college players with their first three picks, the Dodgers went back into the prep ranks for their fourth round selection. With the No. 124 overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft, the Dodgers took Hamilton (Ariz.) High School first baseman Cody Bellinger.

Bellinger, son of former major leaguer Clay Bellinger, is the Dodgers' first bloodlines pick of the 2013 draft.

The Dodgers have reportedly already agreed to a deal with Bellinger and did so before drafting him, per Kyle Odegard of the East Valley Tribune. Odegard also reported the Dodgers went over slot, giving Bellinger "third round money."

At 6'4, 180 pounds, he is seen as a projectable hitter, especially once he fills out. He hit .429 with a .515 on-base percentage in his senior season in high school. He had a verbal commitment to the University of Oregon, but sounds like someone who wants to play professional baseball.

Bellinger was rated as high as the 90th best prospect as late as May 17 by Baseball America.

Clay coached his son Cody in little league, and their Chandler, Ariz. team made it all the way to the Little League World Series in 2007. The son talked about his father as coach and mentor in a recent interview with Pros2Preps.com.

"He's taught me everything when it comes to my swing and my defense. Whenever I get in a slump, he's there," Cody Bellinger said. "We have a cage in our backyard now, so whenever I feel like I want to hit, he's there."

Here is video of a 2012 interview with Bellinger from Student Sports:
