2013 MLB All-Star Game: Clayton Kershaw scheduled to pitch third inning

The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY Sports

Kershaw is the first Dodger to be named to three consecutive All-Star teams since Eric Gagne (2002-2004), and the first starting pitcher to be an All-Star in three straight years since Orel Hershiser (1987-1989).

The 84th MLB All-Star Game will get underway on Tuesday at 5 p.m. PT, with Clayton Kershaw the only Dodger selection at Citi Field in New York. Kershaw will be part of a pitching staff looking to beat the American League for a fourth consecutive season, part of a staff that has held the AL to two total runs in the last three midsummer classics.

Max Scherzer of the Tigers will start on the mound for the American League, pitching for his manager Jim Leyland. Matt Harvey of the Mets starts on the hill for the NL in his home park, a selection by Giants manager Bruce Bochy.

On MLB Network Radio on Tuesday, Bochy said he planned for Harvey to pitch two innings, then would be followed in order by southpaws Kershaw, Patrick Corbin and Cliff Lee for one inning each.

Pitching the third inning will be earlier than usual for Kershaw, who has pitched a scoreless fifth inning in each of the last two All-Star Games. In 2012 Kershaw two singles and a walk in Kansas City, though one of the singles was an easy pop fly to left field that rookie Bryce Harper never saw.

In 2011 Kershaw struck out David Ortiz and got Robinson Cano and Alex Avila to ground out in a perfect frame in Arizona. Ortiz is the one common opponent for Kershaw in both of his previous All-Star Games. Ortiz is starting at designated hitter for the American League on Tuesday, batting sixth.

The National League hasn't won four straight All-Star Games since winning 11 straight from 1972-1982. The NL leads the overall series 43-38-2.
