Matt Kemp injury: Dodgers CF hurts left shoulder on swing, leaves game

USA TODAY Sports

On the very day the Dodgers activated Carl Crawford from the disabled list, giving them four healthy starting-caliber outfielders, they may have lost another in Matt Kemp.

So much for having more outfielders than starting spots. The Dodgers' depth chart took another hit on Friday night as Matt Kemp left in the third inning against the Giants after appearing to hurt his shoulder on a swing.

The Dodgers announced that Kemp left the game with left shoulder AC joint irritation, and the outfielders is listed as day-to-day.

Kemp swung at a pitch from Matt Cain in the second inning then immediately gripped his left shoulder and made a long walk around home plate. He was met by team trainers and after a few practice swings stayed in the game. But Kemp never had a chance to test the shoulder with a real swing, as Cain threw him three straight balls to turn a 1-2 advantage into a walk.

Kemp remained in the game in center field in the bottom of the second, but was pinch hit for by Carl Crawford in the third inning.

Kemp had major shoulder surgery in October, two days after the 2012 season ended, to repair a torn labrum, and it has affected his 2013 campaign considerably. Kemp is hitting .256/.309/.357 with four home runs in 61 games, and two of those home runs came on Wednesday and Thursday at Coors Field in Denver.

The AC joint is not the same area on which Kemp had surgery.

Former beat writer Tony Jackson summed up the Dodgers' situation best.
