Matt Garza trade rumors: Dodgers 'heavily scouting' Cubs RHP, per reports

USA TODAY Sports

Garza, 29, is 5-1 with a 3.22 ERA in 10 starts for the Cubs in 2013, with 58 strikeouts and 18 walks in 64⅓ innings.

The Dodgers will welcome their latest addition on Tuesday when Ricky Nolasco starts against the Diamondbacks. but the team may not be done shopping in the starting pitching market. The Dodgers were one of several teams scouting Matt Garza on Monday night in Chicago, per multiple reports.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that the Dodgers and Indians were "heavily scouting" the Cubs right-hander, who allowed two runs, one earned, in seven innings in a win over the White Sox on Monday. The Rangers were also scouting Garza, per Nightengale.

Garza has been red hot as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches. He has allowed five runs in his last five starts, and is 4-0 with a 0.97 ERA with 34 strikeouts and eight walks in 37 innings. He is making $10.25 million this year and will be a free agent after the season.

There was even talk that the Cubs might want to keep Garza and extend his contract rather than trade him, as reported by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports and John Perrotto of USA Today on Monday. It seems like a negotiating ploy by the Cubs trying to drum up more interest in the right-hander, but Garza told Jon Morosi of Fox Sports, "the possibility of an extension with the Cubs is 'as real as a trade.'"

The Dodgers put fifth starter Stephen Fife on the disabled list Monday with right shoulder bursitis, but thanks to the All-Star break it's possible he may only miss one start. Ted Lilly is also on the disabled list, currently on a rehab assignment. Chris Capuano, who was going to move to the bullpen but will now start on Thursday in place of Fife, has allowed 13 runs in eight innings in his last two starts and has lasted six innings just three times in his last 14 starts, dating back to last season.
