Dodgers minor league report August 1: Corey Seager homers, Zachary Bird strikes out 9

Ogden Raptors

Dodgers minor league affiliates went 2-5 on Thursday, but there was enough good news in the wins from Single-A Great Lakes and rookie level Ogden to go around, such as the first professional home run from 2013 draftee Dillon Moyer (above).

Minor League Player of the Day: The honors go to Zachary Bird, the right-handed pitcher who just turned 19 on July 14. Bird, drafted by the Dodgers in the ninth round of the 2012 draft, struck out nine in six scoreless innings, with six hits and two walks allowed.

Triple-A: The Isotopes managed just one run in a 4-1 loss on the road at Sacramento (Athletics). Leadoff man Dee Gordon was 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, during which time he is hitting .381/.443/.476 (24-for-63) with nine stolen bases. He didn't steal a base on Thursday but was caught for just the eighth time all year. Gordon has 43 steals in 78 games for the Isotopes.

Double-A: Pinch hitter Angelo Songco homered but that was the only run scored by the Lookouts in a 5-1 loss to Jacksonville (Marlins). Chattanooga has scored just 11 runs in its last five games, and have been held to zero or one run in seven of their last 15 games. Ross Stripling started and only allowed one run in three innings but got saddled with the loss. Garrett Gould followed him with another three innings. Gould allowed three runs, two earned, but he also struck out five and walked none. The 21-year-old Gould has performed better with Chattanooga than his Class-A numbers might have suggested, with 26 strikeouts and five walks in 20⅓ innings to go along with his 3.98 ERA.

High Class-A: Five runs allowed in the second inning sent the Quakes to a 10-3 loss at Inland Empire (Angels). No single batter for Rancho Cucamonga had more than one hit. Converted pitcher Blake Smith pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

Low Class-A: The usual suspects came through for the Loons on Thursday night in their 7-1 win over West Michigan (Tigers). Everyone's favorite 16-year-old, Julio Urias, started and pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Corey Seager homered and walked twice, but also left the game after getting hit by a pitch in the eighth inning. Seager has reached base via hit or walk in 26 of his last 27 games, hitting .347/.453/.612 during that span. He's 19. Not to be forgotten, outfielder Jeremy Rathjen was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI.

Rookie (Ogden): A 14-hit attack led the Raptors to an 8-3 win over Grand Junction (Rockies). The offense provided more than enough support for Bird, who struck out nine in his six scoreless innings. Three quarters of the infield each had two hits and a home run, as shortstop Brandon Trinkwon, second baseman Jesmuel Valentin and third baseman Dillon Moyer all had big games. For Moyer, the Dodgers' 38th round pick this year out of the baseball factory that is UC San Diego, it was his first professional home run.

Rookie (Arizona): There wasn't much to report from the 5-4 loss to the AZL Reds. First baseman and 2013 fourth round pick Cody Bellinger went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter. Cristian Gomez, a 17-year-old shortstop signed in July 2012 out of the Dominican Republic by former Dodgers player turned scout Wilton Guerrero, went 2-for-4 with a triple. Gomez is hitting just .158, but it was only his 26th professional game, and he has multi-hit games in two of his last three starts.

Rookie (Dominican): The DSL Dodgers fell at home in a pitchers duel, 19-15 to the DSL Athletics. The standout here was 19-year-old Diomailin Rosario, who pitched a scoreless third inning, the only one of seven Dodgers pitchers to not allow a run.

Coming up: Chris Anderson, the Dodgers' 2013 first round draft pick, starts for Great Lakes at home against West Michigan. Fifth rounder J.D. Underwood starts for Ogden at home against Idaho Falls. Matt Palmer starts for the Isotopes at Sacramento. Jon Michael Redding starts for the Quakes on Friday night in Visalia.
