Shawn Tolleson injury: Dodgers RHP sidelined with hip problem

Tolleson made one appearance with the Dodgers this season, on April 12 in Arizona.

Active roster limits expand on Sunday from 25 men to 40, but relief pitcher Shawn Tolleson won't be among those joining the Dodgers, at least at first. Tolleson suffered a hip injury while recovering from lower back surgery, per Austin Laymance of

Tolleson developed a hip issue as he was coming back from surgery in April to repair a herniated disk in his lower back. The right-hander tried to pitch through the hip injury and made one rehab appearance with Class A Rancho Cucamonga on Aug. 14. But Tolleson's hip wasn't getting better and he's no longer throwing off a mound.

"He's getting slowed down," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "I haven't heard that he's been shut down for the year. I just heard that he's on hold."

Tolleson, 25, made just one appearance for the Dodgers this season, one of a franchise-record-tying 25 pitchers used by the team in 2013. Tolleson pitched on April 12 in Arizona and walked both batters he faced. But after complaining of lower back pain that made it nearly impossible for him to sleep, Tolleson was placed on the disabled list three days later.

After meeting with team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache, Tolleson was first shut down for a week, then it was determined he needed surgery to repair a herniated disc. Tolleson had the procedure on April 25. His rehab began in August at Camelback Ranch in Arizona, but then moved to the Quakes,

Tolleson, drafted by the Dodgers in the 30th round in 2010, made his major league debut in 2012 and was 3-1 with a 4.30 ERA in 40 appearances, with 39 strikeouts and 20 walks in 37⅔ innings. He has two option years remaining.
