1988 Dodgers Week 24 review: It took a perfect game to beat them

Andy Lyons

The Dodgers lowered their magic number to clinch the National League West to six. The only loss in the last week was a perfect game pitched by Tom Browning of the Reds.

The Dodgers' pitching was magnificent with five wins in six games and just eight total runs allowed during the week. Orel Hershiser pitched a third straight shutout and his teammates followed his lead. But the story of the week came on Friday night in Cincinnati, when Tom Browning pitched the 14th perfect game in MLB history.

It was the first perfect game in the National League since Sandy Koufax in 1965, and the first no-hitter against the Dodgers since Nolan Ryan in 1981.

It was also the only loss of the week for the Dodgers in six games against the Braves and Reds, and Los Angeles ended the week with a nine-game lead over Houston and San Francisco in the National League West, with 15 games to play.

Dodger Batter of the Week: Mike Scioscia hit the team's only home run of the week and hit .333 (4-for-12) with three RBI.

Dodger Pitcher of the Week: Nine different pitchers pitched last week and Tim Leary was the only one to give up an earned run. Tim Belcher might have pitched the best game on Friday in Cincinnati with one unearned run in eight innings, but he had to go up against Browning. John Tudor takes the cake with 11 scoreless innings during the week and two wins.

Week 24 Record: 5-1

Upcoming Week: The Dodgers run the Ollie Brown gauntlet, with a weird travel week. They start with two games in Houston, come home for three games in two days against the Padres, then head back on the road for three games in San Francisco.
