Dodgers 1, Padres 0: Four pitchers dominate

Denis Poroy

Zack Greinke, J.P. Howell, Chris Withrow, and Kanley Jansen combined to throw a complete game shutout over the Padres.

Despite having five regular starters in the lineup, the Dodgers' only managed to score one run.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Michael Young hit a ball off the right field wall. Padres' right fielder Will Venable misplayed the hop, allowing Adrian Gonzalez to score from first base. Venable was charged with an error, which meant that Young didn't earn the RBI and Andrew Cashner wasn't charged for the run.

But that was all Los Angeles needed to win.

Zack Greinke was pulled after the 5th inning. Greinke gave up two hits, walked one, and struck out three on 72 pitches. J.P. Howell then came in to pitch a scoreless sixth inning.

In the seventh, the Padres were in a position to score. With runners on first and third and one out, Logan Forsythe struck out looking. Mark Kotsay then grounded out softly to Chris Withrow to end the inning. Withrow struck out two and walked two over two innings of work.

In the ninth, Kenley Jansen struck out the side to end the game. It was Jansen's 27th save of the season.

But the four Dodgers' pitchers weren't the only pitchers to dominate. Four Padres' pitchers gave up just four hits and no earned runs over nine innings. They recorded 13 strike outs total and struck out seven of the last nine Dodgers to walk up to the plate.

The win was the Dodgers' 400th victory of the Padres.

The Dodgers' have tomorrow off before traveling to San Francisco to start a three game series against the Giants. Hyun-Jin Ryu will face Matt Cain in the first game of the series. Before Andre Ethier pinch hit today, Manager Don Mattingly said Ethier could return to the lineup on Tuesday after he missed the last eight games.
