Yasiel Puig sits for Dodgers, Michael Young starts at 2B

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers right fielder is hitting .222/.337/.469 with six home runs in 24 games in September. He has started 94 of 106 games since joining the team in June 3.

LOS ANGELES -- One night after fouling a pair of baseballs off his left shin, Yasiel Puig is out of the Dodgers lineup on Saturday night against the Rockies.

Puig left Friday's game at the end of the fifth inning after fouling a ball off his shin, the same thing he did in the first inning. Puig stayed in the game to finish his at-bat before leaving, and had his leg on ice for the rest of the game. X-rays on the shin were negative.

Manager Don Mattingly said after Friday's game that Puig wanted to play on Sunday, the final game of the regular season, and could possibly sit on Saturday. The Dodgers are locked into the No. 3 seed in the National League no matter what happens, so these final two games are essentially exhibitions anyway.

Skip Schumaker starts in right field in place of Puig, batting leadoff.

Michael Young gets his first start of the season at second base, a position at which he has played 447 times in his career. Young started 14 games at second base in 2012 with the Rangers, and has played one game in reserve at the position this season. That game came on Sept. 20 in San Diego, a day after Mattingly said he would use the final 10 days of the season to get Young time at the position to re-familiarize himself in case he was needed there in an emergency situation during the playoffs.

Young is hitting .341/.333/.409 for the Dodgers, and this is his ninth start in 24 games since he was acquired from the Phillies on Aug. 31. His previous starts included five games at third base and three at first base.
