LOS ANGELES -- Longtime Dodgers first baseman Steve Garvey has his baseball jersey retired by Michigan State on Sunday in their annual First Pitch Dinner at the Kellogg Center on campus.

Garvey hit .376 (50-for-133) with nine home runs, 10 doubles and 38 RBI in 39 games as a third baseman for the Spartans in 1968, his only season playing baseball at the school. He garnered All Big Ten honors and was a second-team All-American that year. Garvey also played defensive back for the Michigan State football team in 1967.

Here is a shot of Garvey at the podium with his number 10 jersey behind him:

He was named the Michigan State Baseball Distinguished Baseball Alumnus of the Year in 2009, and inducted to the Michigan State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.

Garvey is one of four former Spartans to play for the Dodgers, joining Kirk Gibson (a fellow Michigan State Athletics Hall of Famer), Ron Perranoski, and Mike Marshall the pitcher.

Garvey was drafted by the Dodgers in 1968 and played 14 years in Los Angeles. He made eight of his 10 career All-Star appearances while with the Dodgers, all in a row from 1974-1981. He won the National League MVP award in 1974, the NLCS MVP award in 1978, and two All-Star MVP awards (1974, 1978).

Garvey hit .301/.337/.459, a 122 OPS+, in his 14 years as a Dodger and among L.A. Dodgers ranks first in doubles (333) and RBI (992), second in hits (1,968) and total bases (3,004), third in home runs (211), runs scored (852) and extra-base hits (579). Garvey still holds the National League record with 1,207 consecutive games played, the first 1,107 of which came with the Dodgers.
