GLENDALE -- Zack Greinke was among the Dodgers pitchers to throw their first bullpen session of camp on Monday, along with Josh Beckett, Paul Maholm, a bearded Chad Billingsley and others. He are some miscellaneous notes from the past two days at Camelback Ranch.
- Left-handed reliever Onelki Garcia had arthroscopic surgery on Nov. 12 to clean out and remove a bone spur from his left elbow. The original diagnosis was for him to be competitive by the start of the regular season, but for now he remains sidelined from regular workouts and throwing.
"I haven't heard a plan on Onelki yet. He's not on the field for a while. He and Scott [Elbert] are both inside," manager Don Mattingly said on Sunday. "I talked to Nancy [Patterson, assistant athletic trainer], it may be a couple of weeks before he gets outside."
- Hyun-Jin Ryu is listed as 255 pounds, the same weight as last year, but that doesn't seem accurate. The left-hander has lost weight. "I'm just trying to be in the best shape that I can. I'm an athlete, so my job is to be in the best form that I can," Ryu said on Sunday. "I'm significantly lighter compared to this time last year."
But when asked how much Ryu said, "Only I know that."
- Several position players have trickled into camp, well before Thursday's reporting date. Among them are Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp, Alex Guerrero, Scott Van Slyke, Joc Pederson, Justin Turner and Justin Sellers. Dodgers team photographer Jon SooHoo has a series of pictures up on his blog, including several of the position players in action on Monday (and one of my yellow shirt).
- Mattingly was asked about Missouri defensive lineman and NFL prospect Michael Sam, who announced Sunday that he was gay. "It seems like it's the right time, like everybody's ready for it," Mattingly said.
Will we ever see such a player openly come out while in MLB? "I'm sure we will at some point," Mattingly said.
