MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Class-A Great Lakes Loons announced their 2014 Opening Day roster on Monday, highlighted by seven players drafted by the Dodgers in 2013.
The roster includes right-hander Jacob Rhame (drafted in sixth round in 2013), shortstop Brandon Trinkwon (seventh), catcher Kyle Farmer (eighth), left-hander Michael Johnson (14th), right-hander Greg Harris Jr. (17th), right-hander James Baune (21st) and infielder Dillon Moyer (38th) as players entering their second professional season.
Victor Arano, who was ranked the 10th-best Dodgers prospect by Jason Parks of Baseball Prospectus, is the latest Dodgers teenage pitching prospect to make his way through Great Lakes. Arano was 3-2 with a 4.20 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 49⅓ innings last year in the Arizona Rookie League after getting signed out of Mexico in April.
A pair of Loons saw time in Cactus League games this spring for the Dodgers. Farmer, who converted from college infielder to catcher in the pros, played one one game and picked up a base hit in his only at-bat; outfielder Jacob Scavuzzo, who might be Great Lakes' best hitter, was 0-for-4 with a strikeout in four games during the spring.
Scavuzzo (15th) and first baseman Justin Chigbogu (18th) are the two Loons who were ranked among the top 20 prospects in the organization by Baseball America.
The Loons will be managed by Bill Haselman, the former big league catcher who joins the Dodgers organization after managing the last two years managing Class-A Inland Empire in the Angels system.
