CHATTANOOGA -- A pair of pitchers on the 40-man roster, some returning rotation members and the bulk of last year's Rancho Cucamonga offense highlight the 2014 Opening Day roster for the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts, the team announced on Monday.
Right-hander Pedro Baez and southpaw Jarret Martin, both added to the 40-man roster in November, both ended 2013 with the Lookouts. They are the only two players on the 40-man roster in Chattanooga, but will soon be joined by a third, as Cuban Erisbel Arruebarrena, who signed with the Dodgers in February and reported on March 13, will report to the Lookouts after three or four weeks, per David Paschall of the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
In addition to Baez and Martin, other Lookouts to open this spring in big league camp with the Dodgers were pitchers Chris Reed and Carlos Frias, and catchers J.C. Boscan and Chris O'Brien as non-roster invitees.
Reed and Andres Santiago each made 25 starts for Chattanooga last season, and Duke Von Schammann made 12. All three are back in 2014, along with Garrett Gould, who also ended 2013 in Double-A.
Scott Schebler, who won the Branch Rickey Award as the Dodgers minor league player of the year in 2013 after hitting .296/.360/.581 with 69 extra-base hits in 125 games with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga, is one of five regulars promoted from the Quakes, joining middle infielder Darnell Sweeney, first baseman O`Koyea Dickson and outfielders Jon Garcia and Noel Cuevas.
During spring training games this year, the Dodgers had game-winning hits from two minor leaguers — Cuevas on March 11, and Sweeney on March 28 — and both open the season with the Lookouts.
Chattanooga will be managed by Razor Shines, in his second season coaching in the Dodgers system. Shines managed Class-A Great Lakes in 2013.
In addition to the active roster, pitcher Tyson Brummett, catcher Alberto Rosario and infielder Aaron Bates all open the season on the disabled list for Chattanooga.
