Adrian Gonzalez, Hyun-jin Ryu lead Dodgers over Diamondbacks again

Gonzalez had his most RBI as a Dodger, and Ryu did something not done since Orel Hershiser 26 years ago.

Adrian Gonzalez provided the bulk of the offense and Hyun-jin Ryu was magnificent on the mound, giving the Dodgers a 6-0 win over the Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game weekend series at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Gonzalez hit a two-run home run in the first inning, a two-run single in the third inning, and for good measure added an RBI single in the eighth inning. The five runs batted in was one shy of his career high and was the third time Gonzalez has driven in at least five runs in a game.

With the three hits Gonzalez not only extended his hitting streak to seven games, but also extended his streak of games with an extra base hit to six, three shy of the franchise best since 1914 - set by Jack Fournier (1925) and John Roseboro (1961).

Joining Gonzalez in the seven-game hitting streak club was Hanley Ramirez, who had two doubles and a single and was driven in all three times by Gonzalez. During his seven-game streak, Ramirez is hitting .444 (12-for-27) with six doubles and two home runs.

That was more than enough offense for Ryu, who didn't allow a runner to advance past first base in his seven innings. Ryu gave up two hits and a walk while striking out eight, looking well rested seven days after his eight-run, two-inning home opener short stint.

Ryu had a streak of eight straight batters retired from the second to the fourth inning, and finished by retiring his final 10 batters faced.

Ryu has allowed no runs in 19 innings on the road this season, including 12 scoreless innings against Arizona. Since 1914 there have only been six Dodgers streaks of three or more straight scoreless road starts, including Ryu's current run. The only streak longer was by Orel Hershiser, who spun together four straight scoreless road starts during his 59-inning scoreless streak in September 1988.

Joining the streaking crew was Dee Gordon, who was 2-for-4 with a stolen base. It was the third consecutive multi-hit game for Gordon and his fifth multi-hit game in 10 games in 2014. Last year, Gordon had five multi-games in 38 games.

Yasiel Puig in his first start since last Saturday, went 1-for-4 with a double and scored twice in the win.

The Dodgers are 5-1 on the road this season.
