Dodgers set starting rotation for Giants series

Paul Maholm gets the start on Wednesday in San Francisco, making the next trip through the starting rotation one of extra rest for the other four starters.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly on Sunday revealed his starting rotation for the upcoming series in San Francisco, and the team will use Monday's off day to give everyone on the staff an extra day of rest.

Josh Beckett gets the call in Tuesday night's opener against the Giants, followed by Paul Maholm on Wednesday night, and Hyun-jin Ryu on getaway day on Thursday afternoon.

Monday is the fifth off day for the Dodgers in a 15-day span, but Tuesday begins a stretch of 13 straight days with a game as well as a run of 29 games in 30 days. Mattingly has stated throughout the spring and in the early portion of the regular season that he would utilize the off days in April to give his starting pitchers extra rest whenever possible.

It was just a matter of when Maholm would slide back into the rotation. The left-handed last started on April 5, allowing five runs on seven hits, including a pair of home runs, in 4⅓ innings in a loss to the Giants. He pitched an inning of relief on Wednesday against the Tigers and on Saturday against the Diamondbacks.

Beckett, Ryu, Zack Greinke and today's starter Dan Haren will all make their next start on five days rest instead of four.

The Giants will counter with Tim Lincecum on Tuesday, followed by Ryan Vogelsong and Madison Bumgarner.
