LOS ANGELES -- The right thumb contusion for Hanley Ramirez has knocked him out of the Dodgers lineup on Sunday, and forced the team to make a roster move before their series finale with the Rockies at Dodger Stadium. Infielder a Carlos Triunfel was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque, with relief pitcher Jose Dominguez optioned back to the Isotopes.
Sunday was a planned day off anyway for Ramirez, a chance to get two days of rest coupled with Monday's off day after starting 24 of the first 25 games of the season. Justin Turner starts at shortstop for the Dodgers on Sunday, and Ramirez might be able to pinch hit.
"Hanley seems better today. He looks like he's day-to-day. There's a chance of him being able to be used today," manager Don Mattingly said. "I'm pretty sure, unless we go backwards somehow, he'll be ready Tuesday."
The Dodgers open a nine-game road trip on Tuesday night against the Twins in Minnesota.
The Dodgers were already playing short-handed with four bench players after recalling Dominguez on Monday and optioning Chone Figgins. Because nobody was placed on the disabled list, Figgins can't return from his optional assignment inside of 10 days. The earliest Figgins can be recalled without an injury is Thursday.
Triunfel will be the backup jack of all trades infielder during the interim. The 24-year-old was hitting .291/.344/.364 with four doubles in 17 games with Triple-A Albuquerque. Triunfel, who was claimed off waivers from the , played nine games at shortstop, five games at second base and two more at third for the Isotopes. on April 2
"We were already nervous about the throwing side of [Ramirez's injury]. We're already short, and if we were to go even more short, fielder-wise it would put us in a little danger," Mattingly said. "We were in a spot pitching-wise that we've gotten everybody back on track with rest. With the off day tomorrow, we should be good."
Dominguez pitched in one game this week, allowing two runs in two innings on Monday. He has allowed six runs in five innings this season with seven strikeouts and two walks in four appearances. The need for a seven-man bullpen was lessened with each of the last five starters lasting at least six innings, including 15 innings from Josh Beckett and Paul Maholm on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Triunfel will wear No. 45 with the Dodgers.
