3rd time a charm for Dodgers against Marlins

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers were held scoreless the first two times through the order on Tuesday, but the third time through provided more than enough to make a winner out of Josh Beckett for the first time in 15 starts.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers rallied for five runs in the sixth inning in a rare show of run support for Josh Beckett, highlighting a 7-1 win over the Marlins on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.

When Josh Beckett got Jarrod Saltalamacchia to ground out to end the top of the sixth inning, the right-hander went into the dugout having pitched very well again but with nothing to show for it. The game was a scoreless tie, fitting a pattern this season. The Dodgers scored seven total runs in Beckett's first six starts of the season, while he was in the game.

The Dodgers were just 4-for-18 off Marlins starter Jacob Turner in his first two trips through the batting order. But that all changed in the bottom of the sixth, after Beckett flied out to start the frame.

Dee Gordon singled to right field, except that because he is Dee Gordon with Dee Gordon speed it was a double.

Yasiel Puig walked.

Hanley Ramirez doubled to left field, scoring both, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead

Adrian Gonzalez followed with a double to right, scoring Ramirez. 3-0.

Matt Kemp then singled to center field to score Gonzalez, and chase Turner from the game. 4-0.

Carl Crawford followed with a bloop single, putting runners on the corners.

Justin Turner hit a drive to right field, quite possibly the hardest-hit ball of the inning, but Giancarlo Stanton made a fantastic catch near the wall, then nearly doubled off Crawford at first. But Crawford was safe, allowing Kemp to score on the sacrifice fly. 5-0.

The five-run outburst in the sixth was the Dodgers' highest-scoring inning of the season, matching the fifth inning on April 19 against Arizona.

It also made a winner of Josh Beckett for the first time since Sept. 30, 2012. His 14-start streak without a win was the third-longest by a Dodger since 1914.

Beckett pitched into the seventh inning for a fourth straight start and allowed only an unearned run. He struck out six and walked three, all while allowing four hits. His ERA on the season is down to 2.38.

"With Josh it was just more of the same. He's been like this every time out. We're getting used to it now. He could have won pretty much every game he's pitched," said manager Don Mattingly. "It's good to see him get a win."

Up next

The Dodgers go for the sweep on Wednesday with Paul Maholm on the mound. Like a lamb to the slaughter, the Marlins will call up Anthony DeSclafani from Double-A to make his major league debut.

Notes

Puig, on his bobblehead night, was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. He is hitting .423 (22-for-52) during his 13-game hitting streak.

The Dodgers had five doubles on Tuesday, by five different players, and on the season rank second in the majors with 83 two-baggers.

Chone Figgins was hit by a pitch as a pinch hitter and scored in the seventh inning. His on-base percentage is .417. In 17 plate appearances as a pinch hitter Figgins has reached base eight times (.471 OBP).
