Yasiel Puig continues streaks in Dodgers loss

Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

Yasiel Puig continued to make an imprint on the Dodgers record book in Saturday's otherwise forgettable 18-7 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Puig hit a mammoth home run to left center field in the third inning, cutting the Dodgers deficit to 7-2. It was the second straight game with a home run for Puig, who now shares the team lead with nine home runs with Adrian Gonzalez.

It was also the eighth consecutive game with both an extra-base hit and a run batted in for Puig, the longest such streak in Dodgers history. The last player in baseball to have such an eight-game streak was Evan Longoria, from Sept. 2-8, 2009.

Puig's streak of eight straight games with an RBI is one shy of the Dodgers franchise record, shared by Matt Kemp (2011-12), Roy Campanella (1955) and Augie Galan (1944).

Puig's streak of eight straight games with an extra-base hit was matched earlier this season by Adrian Gonzalez and is one away from the franchise best, set by John Roseboro (1961) and Johnny Frederick (1925).

The home run was Puig's only hit in five at-bats, but that was enough to extend his career-best hitting streak to 16 games. During the streak he is hitting .409/.494/.758 with six home runs, five doubles, 12 runs scored and 21 RBI.

Up next

The Dodgers go for a series win on Sunday afternoon, sending Dan Haren to the mound in his third start against the Diamondbacks this year. Josh Collmenter starts the series finale for Arizona. Puig, in case you were wondering, is 2-for-6 with a home run, a double and four RBI against Collmenter.
