Hyun-jin Ryu starts opener vs. Reds

Stephen Dunn

LOS ANGELES -- After their first week all year with two series wins, the Dodgers open a long, 10-game homestand looking to make a move in the National League West. They welcome the Reds to town for a three-game series beginning Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium.

Hyun-jin Ryu gets the call for the Dodgers in the series opener, making his second start since returning from the disabled list. He struck out nine in his return last Wednesday against the Mets, allowing two runs in six innings. The left-hander walked one in New York, his fifth straight start with no more than one unintentional walk.

Since the 2013 All-Star break, Ryu has walked only 19 batters unintentionally in 20 starts, with 101 strikeouts (20.5% of batters faced) and a 2.92 ERA.

Monday's Memorial Day evening start is Ryu's first start at Dodger Stadium in 29 days, when he allowed six runs in five innings to the Rockies before hitting the shelf with left shoulder inflammation.

Ryu faced the Reds once in his career, allowing one run in seven innings with nine strikeouts last July 27 at Dodger Stadium.

Johnny Cueto starts for Cincinnati, coming off his only truly bad performance of the season. The right-hander allowed eight runs in 5⅓ innings against the Nattionals on Tuesday, but before that had a 1.25 ERA while averaging eight innings per start.

Matt Kemp, who didn't start any of the three games in Philadelphia as the Dodgers figure out what to do in center field defensively, is 6-for-12 with two home runs and two walks against Cueto. If Kemp plays left field, as manager Don Mattingly intimated he soon would before Sunday's game, it will be his first time at the position since June 21, 2006. Kemp played 11 games in left field during that rookie season, including eight starts, but hasn't returned to the position in nearly eight years.

Andre Ethier is 3-for-12 with a home run, a double and two walks against Cueto, Adrian Gonzalez is 3-for-8 with a home run, a double and a walk, and Dee Gordon is 3-for-6 with a stolen base against him.
