Vin Scully to miss 2 games with cold

Charley Steiner, Orel Hershiser and Nomar Garciaparra will call Monday and Tuesday's games against the Reds on television with Scully missing time.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers open a 10-game homestand on Monday against the Reds at Dodger Stadium, but the first two games will be without Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, who is out Monday and Tuesday with a chest cold.

Filling in for Scully on the SportsNet LA television broadcast on Monday and Tuesday will be Charley Steiner, Orel Hershiser and Nomar Garciparra, the first time the Dodgers have used a three-person announcing group this season. On radio, Rick Monday will call play-by-play with Kevin Kennedy as analyst.

Scully, in his 65th season announcing Dodgers games, does not call games east of Arizona. His last game called was Sunday, May 18 in Phoenix against the Diamondbacks. Steiner and Hershiser called the six games in New York and Philadelphia last week.

The 86-year-old Scully in 2012 missed five games with a cold, including missing just his second home opener in his legendary career.

"I was overwhelmed. We had the TV on opening day and my face was in my pillow. I heard the crowd and the introductions," Scully said in 2012. "It was almost heartbreaking to want to be here that badly and not be here, then hear everybody say 'we miss you.' That really was an emotional uppercut."

Scully, who calls all nine innings (and extra innings) for television, the first three innings of which are simulcast on radio, will get two more days off this weekend, with exclusive national broadcasts against the Pirates on Fox on Saturday and ESPN on Sunday.
