Dodgers vs. Cardinals starting pitching matchups

Jeff Gross

St. Louis has several pitchers on the shelf, but here's a look at the potential weekend matchups.

The Dodgers return home to Los Angeles, starting with a four-game weekend series against the Cardinals in an NLCS rematch of sorts at Dodger Stadium. Except this time Michael Wacha took time off from being the second coming to hit the disabled list with right shoulder problems.

Wacha isn't alone among injured Cardinals pitchers. Joe Kelly has been out since April with a left hamstring strain, Jaime Garcia is on the DL with left shoulder inflammation, and Shelby Miller left his Tuesday start in Colorado with back spasms.

St. Louis already called up 2013 first-round pick Marco Gonzalez (19th overall) to start Wednesday at Coors Field, so he's out for the series in Los Angeles. Knowing that the Cardinals' rotation is a very fluid situation, here's a look at the scheduled starters this weekend at Dodger Stadium.

Thursday, 7:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

Josh Beckett is 2-2 with a 1.73 ERA, with six runs allowed in four starts, with 27 strikeouts and five walks in 26 innings. Adam Wainwright has been his typical brilliant self this season, 10-3 with a 2.08 ERA so far. In his last eight outings he had one blow-up start, with seven runs allowed to San Francisco, but allowed six total runs in the other seven starts during that span.

Friday, 7:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Since returning from the disabled list Hyun-jin Ryu has 35 strikeouts against just seven walks and has six wins in seven starts to show for it. Carlos Martinez after 30 relief appearances joined the starting rotation on June 16. He has allowed four runs in nine innings in his two starts, with eight strikeouts and five walks.

Saturday, 4:15 p.m. PT (Fox)

Zack Greinke had his one truly bad start of the season on Monday in Kansas City, but he returns home to Dodger Stadium where his strikeout rate this year has been an absurd 30.9 percent, compared to 20.4 percent on the road. The Cardinals send the still undefeated TBD to the mound, but the upside for the Dodgers is that TBD is also winless. Truth be told, the St. Louis player development machine has been so good of late they can probably turn one of the flight attendants on the trip out west into a 92-mph sinkerballer with a deceptive delivery in time to make this Saturday start.

The game will be televised exclusively by Fox.

Sunday, 1:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

Clayton Kershaw takes his streak of 21 straight scoreless innings into Sunday's series finale, his first home start since his no-hitter on June 18. Technically his opponent is also TBD, but Miller is in line to start Sunday for St. Louis on four days rest and told Cody Ulm of MLB.com on Tuesday he didn't expect to miss a start.
