Richy is 6'4, 210 pounds out of Golden, Colorado. As a junior at UNLV he was 11-4 with a 3.20 ERA in 16 starts, with 113 strikeouts and 24 walks in 121 innings.
Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com on the draft broadcast suggested Richy would end up as a reliever.
Baseball America had Richy slated for perhaps the fourth round:
"Richy has developed into a workhorse innings-eater, with an 89-92 mph fastball with sink that reaches 94. He’s tough for hitters to elevate when he’s going right. He complements it with a 12-to-6 curveball that at times is late and sharp, giving him a second average pitch to go with good command."
He is probably worth the pick for the mustache alone:
Richy is the first of eight picks for the Dodgers on Friday, after drafting right-handed high school pitcher Grant Holmes in the first round and left-handed high school center fielder Alex Verdugo in the second round.
So blessed to be drafted by the dodgers! Thank you to everyone who has been there for me— John Richy (@jrichy45) June 6, 2014
